Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) which has its main Campus in Islamabad Pakistan. It is one of the four major universities of the world. It is established under the parliament act (XXXIX) in 1974. At that time it was the second largest university of world and first largest university of the Asia and Africa. But now more than 60 universities in the world are providing the education on distance learning basis.

The basic object of the AIOU was and is to provide the education to those peoples/students who cannot continue their education under conventional educational system (CES). AIOU is now providing the education to the peoples of villages and remote areas of great homeland who cannot go to schools and colleges or who they want to continue their education along with jobs.

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is national university which is providing education on distance learning system (DLS) throughout Pakistan. AIOU is offering programs from METRIC to PHD levels. More than 36 regional offices and in so many different cities contact offices are working for the guidance of students.

AIOU is providing education on semester system. Students can take admission two times in a year, one in spring semester (Admissions open in February) and second in autumn semester (Admissions open in August). For Under graduation students admission open in both semester while for post graduation students admission open one time in a year. Books are provided to the students along with other tutorial materials in each semester.

Tutors are hired by the university on part time biases for the guidance of students and tutorials meetings also held in each semester. University has also University Science Complex for science students where they can make researches. Moreover University has Main Library, student’s hostel, and internet lab.
